So I have been much remiss in writing, so I’ve decided to be a real jerk and commit myself to at least one new poem per week. I’ll throw up a Poem of the Week page once I get a few going.
Here’s attempt 1, for February 22nd.
I call it….
Happy (like) You.
Before you came along
I couldn’t say happy
without telling a lie
I, all rife with promise
and generally empty smiles
but then you came along and loosened up my tounge
and reached into my soul and didn’t mind the murky bits
and shook them off and shook me up
and showed me what I’m made of
and so now maybe if I
told you there was once a man from nantucket or something ridiculous
about elephants or dinosaurs
you’d laugh
but I understand that this is sometimes solitude and wondering what happy is
like Charlie Brown and bad cliche
happy like confusing one hand for another
and learning how to kiss you
it’s writing in the dark so I don’t wake you up
and then when morning comes
and all my words have run together and I’m left with nothing but
a big black scribbly mess of feeling
I’ll be happy like believing something better came along
suddenly obtainable, even for broken hearted minds like me
happy like not wanting you to hear this
because it’s just too strong
and I can only claim poetic license for so long
happy like going to bed after just a good night kiss
and not minding it at all
because sometimes I just want to be reminded
that this is real
happy like chopstick conducting Mozart
at 2:30 in the morning and watching tear tracks
because nobody shall sleep, nobody shall sleep,
not even me, if that’s okay with you
because the princess is in another castle
and we’ve still got six more levels to go
happy like wanting to cook for you, every day
and not worry about the mess
happy like the blues and greens behind my eyes
that I see when I think your name
and happy like knowing happiness can be quite real
happy like wanting to hold you all the time
just to see the blue
happy like wanting you and just you, plain and simple
happy like melody
happy like waiting for a bus to hit me because this is just too good
happy like
happy like
happy like you.
Over on the right you’ll see some creative (ish) titles. These are transcripts of my poems. Feel free to peruse.
