A poem With Sole

So it starts out with a pair of these Velcro shoes
You know the type, pink and sparkly and they probably say Barbie on the side
Then a couple of years later you end up with your big kid shoes
With two rabits going around the tree painfully slow
But you don’t care because hot damn, youre doing it yourself
Then its awkward white and brown
hand-me-downs that are cool due to association and
This really hideous pair of lime green and black basketball shoes
That somehow make you faster
And then its suddenly and gloriously this basic black leather
Mary jane strap half inch heel with rounded toe
That you check the mail for every day for four to six weeks
And then youre a real actor and damn can you dance

And its pair after pair of those until
this digusting pair of clogs
that are brown and suede
but after 6 years and too many rainstorms
and a trip through Europe and most of the states
and a brief trip in OZ are crusting leather
and broken buckles
A few years later when your heels get higher and
Your leather uppers stretch
And  on the off days its chuck Taylors pink
Then red then white then black and pink and then
The best thrift find ever in the perfect blue
Which you still kick around in
And three pairs of running shoes and one hell of a summer
Jeans tucked into boots so soft its like slippers
And then these heels
Lets talk about these heels
Fuck heels but I wear them anyway
21st birthday nearly ruined
But mostly
The important moments
No socks and barefoot
On all surfaces at all times of day in inappropriate weather
because I just like the feeling
Grass and rocks a couple of screws and rain and even snow
My feet have touched it all
Floorboards warmed with sun and the smell of cold and coffee
Dig into the rug or maybe the garden dirt
Because I like that connection
More soul than sole
Know what I mean?
