A Poem Of God

Let me teach you about God
i can’t promise I’ll be right and I won’t swear to keep your interest
but I will start out by saying that he’s a rat fink bastard
who takes when he should give and forgets to answer his messages
even more than I do
and you’d think after this many years
he’d have a better system
but I suppose that being omnipotent gives one liberty to do
whatever the hell one wants to do
without much in the line of asking if it’s okay with us.
But sometimes, I suppose, sometimes he’s alright.
Sunrises, particularly, he’s gotten down to an art
I wrote that much on a plane
next to a guy who smelled like peanut butter and wore a yarmulke
and kept glancing at me sideways between pages of his travel sized Talmund
as I listened to Fiddler on The Roof and read Everything is Illuminated
just to be funny.
I should have asked him about faith.
I don’t usually take advice from strangers who smell like peanut butter
and who wear bright yellow shirts
but there was something about the way that he held his prayer book
that touched me
and who knows
maybe I would have touched him, somehow
the shiksa with her ipod and blue hair
I could have listened
listening shouldn’t be that hard
it goes into the places we neglect and fills those empty voids
oh, I don’t pretend to be a prophet
i don’t understand the elaborate intricities of the whole of creation
i just know what I like
and to the power of good
ina world too full of misunderstanding to reconsider a shift in ideals
and maybe for a second we could all get along
and yeah, i know that’s silly.
I know there’s things I haven’t seen and songs I haven’t heard
but maybe–maybe he has.
maybe you have.
So next time, tell me about them
whisper of worlds unexplored and of the people I haven’t met
and maybe I’ll recognize some part within myself
ourselves
and finy a ltitle unity in our respective gold leafed pages
words from the ancients can still ring true
its just a matter of finding that connection
making tha tshift into that place
where good matters and hope survives
