Speaking Engagements

Workshops

Poetry and prose writing workshops can be as short as 30 minutes or as long as two and a half hours (or longer in special circumstances). Typically they involve a series of writing prompts with time built in for composition, recitation, feedback, and revision.
Performance-based workshops, which could be suitable for a dramatic writing class, involve composition writing and improvisation, tips for articulate presentation, and theater games.

Drama Workshops include improvisational work, theatre games, communication exercises and time for performance and feedback.

Other workshop possibilities include: improv, costuming, directing, puppetry, movement, acting, etc.
Inquiries for specific audiences are welcomed.

Performances
There is no “typical” performance!
A performance can be as brief as 30 minutes for a classroom of 10 and as long as 2 hours for an entire student body. Using a unique blend of poetry, humor and life experience, I encourage students and faculty to find and explore their own passions and to nurture their own talents to become happier and more creative individuals.

A brief history and explanation of performance poetry is always included, as well as a question and answer session.

Combined performance/workshop options are available as well.

I believe in adventure.
I believe in the power of change.
I believe in loving even when it hurts.
I believe in finding beauty in all things.
I believe in looking up.
I believe in the intrinsic good in all people and that everyone has a story worth hearing.
I believe that loss reinforces what we have and that everything around us is a gift.
I believe in words and the power they hold.

I believe in making a difference and being the one to listen.
I believe in dreams and aspirations and trying even when its hard because I refuse to give up until I know what could have been.
I believe that fear can be conquered and that we grow stronger because of it.
I believe in the night sky and the perfect blue and fresh baked cookies and pancakes and long nights with friends and in the knowledge that the smallest things can bring us the most happiness.
I believe in hope most of all, that things will always get better and that no matter how dark the night, we will eventually find the light.

I believe that all students should be exposed to poetry from a young age, which is why I have begun speaking at various school events around the area. If your school would be interested in having me, please do not hesitate to contact me

Frequently AskedĀ  Questions

What is “Poetry Slam?”

Slam poetry is a type of poetry that integrates the rhthym and wordplay of written poetry with the added excitement of intended performance.

When is a good time for you to come?
Anytime!
However, if you are looking for “themed” programs at your venue, April is National Poetry Month and the last week in August is National Poetry Week.
National Eating Disorders Awareness Week is the last week in February.

Who will benefit from your presentation?

I wholeheartedly believe that everyone is a poet. I believe that Arts Education is an integral part of the school curriculum, and exposure to new and different art forms deeply enriches a child’s education.

Sharing my love of poetry with your students will not only impact their writing, speaking and articulation skills, but faculty and staff will learn dynamic ways to bring poetry into their classroom and begin to bridge new methods of communication in the classroom.

Thanks!

Catie.
